SAD SONGS FOR HAPPY PEOPLE
Musical stories about melancholy and passion, homesickness and nostalgia, love and desire, boundless joy and the endless longing for freedom. Feelings like melancholy, home-sickness and nostalgia are central themes in the carefully selected repertoire of songs written by songwriters like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Silje Nergaard, and Tom Waits.

HEMMET I MITT HJÄRTA (The Home In My Heart)
I am currently composing songs to poetry and lyrics written by Nina Plogman. The songs are a tribute to my Fenno-Swedish roots and the countryside of Central Ostrobothnia where I grew up.
KATJA MARIA & THOMAS BÖTTCHER DUO
I have been collaborating with Cologne-based German pianist, arranger and composer Thomas Böttcher since 2012. On some occasions, we are joined on stage by Finnish cellist Jani Metso.
IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO
Across the world, people are fascinated by the melancholic and passionate tango. The unique project IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO combines tango cultures from all over the world: south, north, east and west.
In IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO, the Argentine tango meets its sisters from Finland and Turkey. Beatriz Aguiar (Uruguay), Katja Maria (Finland), and Meral Ari (Turkey) are vibrant performers with backgrounds ranging from South-American folklore, Salsa, Nordic folk music and folk-pop, to Jazz, Turkish kanto and cabaret. Accomanied by Mark Arthur Wyman on the piano.
Together with the ladies of Pavadita tango string quartet, I sing a repertoire of songs in which the nostalgia and melancholia of Finnish tango meets the fiery passion of Argentinian tango, in sparkling arrangements for string quartet and voice. The tango repertoire is varied with original “chamber-folk-pop” compositions for voice, piano and string quartet by Finnish composer Maija Ruuskanen.
